It means that there is a few harsh, immediate minutes of fighting, in which it seems as though there is elf after elf after elf, and all Sousei can focus on is Shinpachi at his back and taking care of the wave of demonic creatures at the front--
And then, all of a sudden, there are no more.
Sousei huffs out a short breath as he stabs his sword straight through the eye of the last elf facing him, squinting into the darkness of the mall with clear suspicion. This isn't all there is, he knows--but it may be all that there is in this particular area, and others are terrorizing people they find to be better, easier targets.
He rips his sword out with a vague expression of distaste (these things are gross), and then straightens, glancing over his shoulder to see how Shinpachi fared. He's sure they're just going to go find more of these creatures, so...they have more work to do.]
