Christmas is a traditionally Western religious holiday. It was introduced in Japan in 1552 as an important celebration of faith.

It is celebrated in recent times as ways to be thankful for people and this is usually done by presenting presents to them.

[...Ah. What a pleasant surprise. Even if he does vaguely know of Christmas in his time, it's certainly not something that's widely celebrated--but it seems that it's different in modern times.

He doesn't feel bad, per se, for not having gifts to return, but...

So instead of something as impersonal as a text message, Mitsuru will get a handwritten note in her mailbox as well (because he knows she'll appreciate it for what it is); traditional calligraphy was, after all, part of his excellent education, thanks stepdad.]
